The African agricultural sector is increasingly operating as a business, where access to modern farming technology plays a critical role in boosting productivity and profitability for African farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs or agripreneurs. William Marbell, Continent Manager, Africa of Trimble Inc., shared how his company’s innovative tractor technology can be of value to smallholder and large-scale farmers alike.
Trimble is transforming the way the world works by delivering products and services that connect the physical and digital worlds in a broad range of industries such as agriculture, construction, geospatial and transportation and logistics.
In the latest Africa Investment Rising video spotlight, Marbell spoke about Trimble’s reputation as the world’s leading manufacturer of positioning technology and their work across industries to “integrate different phases of work and ultimately eliminate waste and increase productivity”. For this spotlight, Marbell focused on Trimble’s technology for the agricultural sector.
“For agriculture, our technology uses GPS (global positioning systems) to provide guidance to machinery,” said William Marbell, Continent Manager, Africa of IGD Frontier Member Trimble Inc.
Specifically, Trimble installs GPS sensors into the tractor that “enables the farmer to improve the alignment and reduce overlap when using different farming implements and equipment,” Marbell said. In improving tractor accuracy, this technology alleviates fuel costs and bolsters productivity.
As African public and private sector leaders work to enhance the global competitiveness of their agricultural products, Trimble’s farmer-focused technology is of high investment value to African markets.
