THE INITIATIVE FOR GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE NIGERIA LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE SIGN MOU
TO BOLSTER INVESTMENT IN NIGERIA
Washington, D.C. – The Initiative for Global Development (IGD) and the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), today, during a meeting of the IGD’s Leadership Council. The meeting, hosted by Co-Chairs Secretary Madeleine K. Albright and General Colin L. Powell, brought together accomplished business leaders and global development experts to advise IGD’s strategic direction, programs, and initiatives.
The MOU aims to grow opportunities to highlight and promote investments in Nigeria, a key focus country for IGD in 2014. It will leverage IGD’s influential network of Frontier Leaders with NLI’s network of credible and accomplished Nigerians, to further each organization’s mission, driving poverty reduction through business investment and development in Nigeria.
“This MOU is an important component of IGD’s focus on Nigeria this year,” said Lionel Johnson, Senior Vice President of IGD. “Nigeria represents tremendous economic opportunities, but also great challenges. For this reason, IGD has made Nigeria a priority, and is eager to work with NLI’s country experts to identify new opportunities for our Frontier Leaders to make strategic investments that drive poverty reduction in areas that need it most.”
From 2005 to 2013, Nigeria’s GDP Growth Rate averaged 6.8 percent, with the oil sector driving the economy’s growth. Diversification of the economy will be important to support sustainable economic growth and job creation, combatting the country’s reported 23.9 percent unemployment rate in 2011. IGD has made this country a priority, to help companies identify commercially-viable, poverty-reducing investments that promote business-led development.
