DELIVERING CONNECTIVITY ACROSS WEST AFRICA:
The internet market in Africa has been held back by unreliability, poor quality, and high costs. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the internet penetration rate is only 8 percent, compared to the world average of 23 percent. In order to make improved connectivity available at lower costs, Main One Cable Company built and operates the first privately-owned submarine cable along the West African coastline. The Nigeria-based communications services company now provides open access, wholesale, international broadband capacity to four countries in West Africa. Low income consumers have benefited from a drop in wholesale broadband prices by as much as 90 percent.
